Hi there!

I’m Helen Joy.

"If there are a ton of good photographers to choose from, you might as well choose someone you like being around!”

I am a storyteller residing in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina. I’ve been a professional photographer since 2006 and have traveled the world photographing and telling peoples’ stories through images and words. I am an avid writer and published author who is in constant pursuit of connection in a world where we are so often disconnected.

I know there are a lot of talented photographers to choose from so I will tell you what sets me and my photos apart. First of all, beautiful images will be made in our time together, guaranteed. Because I feel confident in photographing in all different situations, lighting, and locations, I find that I am able to bring a very relaxed and joyful attitude to my sessions while still helping direct you.

I intentionally set up my sessions to feel sacred and I want you and your family to leave feeling like you had a very connective experience, not a stressful one. Over the past nearly two decades I have developed deep relationships with my clients because it feels like our time together is more than just photos.

I usually shoot about 30% classic portraiture and 70% lifestyle/photo documentary. I like to tell the story through movement and candid photos, while also taking time to create striking and timeless portraits. I edit all my photos in black and white and color, with a film finish.

As a birth and postpartum doula I am especially drawn to the fleeting but beautiful journey of pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. This work has enhanced my ability to be sensitive to every session’s needs and to be flexible.

As a long time wedding and elopement photographer, I am passionate about my couples enjoying and being present on their wedding day. I take only a handful of wedding clients a year so that I stay fresh and excited.

Lastly, I am a firm believer that if you wait till your life is perfect, you’re at your goal weight, your teenager isn’t moody…that you will miss out on so many moments of connection that are already there and I would love to help facilitate that for you.

Let’s create some treasured images and have fun doing it!
